As of 7 December 2024, Australia has introduced significant changes to its skilled migration program, including the modernized Skilled Occupation List (CSOL) and the new Skills in Demand (SID) visa. These updates aim to streamline immigration processes and address critical workforce shortages in key industries across the nation.
What’s New in the Skilled Migration Program?
- Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL): The CSOL replaces the multiple skilled occupation lists that were previously used for the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa. This updated list now includes over 450 occupations across various sectors, such as:
- Construction
- Cyber Security
- Agriculture
- Health
This list is based on labor market analysis and consultations by Jobs and Skills Australia, ensuring that the occupations listed align with Australia’s current workforce needs. It will apply specifically to the SID Core Skills stream and Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa (Direct Entry stream).
- Skills in Demand (SID) Visa: The SID (subclass 482) visa replaces the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa. This new visa offers a clear pathway to permanent residence for most skilled migrants and ensures employers have access to the talent they need to grow their businesses.
The SID visa includes three streams:
- Core Skills stream: For applicants in occupations listed on the CSOL, identified as being in shortage.
- Specialist Skills stream: For high-level professionals and innovators who contribute to national productivity.
- Labour Agreement stream: This stream is being replaced by the Essential Skills stream, which is still under development.
With the SID visa, applicants benefit from:
- Permanent residency pathway: Work with an approved employer counts towards eligibility.
- Reduced work experience requirement: Applicants need only one year of experience in their nominated occupation or related field, which is one year less than the TSS visa.
- English language requirements: The SID visa maintains the same language requirements as the TSS medium-term stream.
- SID Visa Streams: Core and Specialist Skills:
- Core Skills Stream: This stream is for applicants in occupations listed on the CSOL and who will be paid a salary of AUD 73,150 or higher. These occupations have been identified as critical to Australia’s labor market needs.
- Specialist Skills Stream: This stream is for highly skilled workers in any occupation listed in the ANZSCO 2022 (excluding Major Group 3, 7, and 8 such as trades workers, drivers, and laborers) who earn at least the Specialist Skills Income Threshold of AUD 135,000 per year. This stream helps drive innovation and job creation.
- What Happens to the TSS Visa? With the introduction of the SID visa, applications for the TSS visa officially closed on 6 December 2024. However, outstanding applications submitted before this date will still be processed according to the existing arrangements. TSS visa holders will continue to have a pathway to permanent residence, provided they meet the eligibility criteria.
- Permanent Residency Pathway for Skilled Workers: One of the key benefits of the SID visa is the pathway to permanent residence. Skilled workers on the Core Skills stream and Specialist Skills stream can qualify for permanent residency after meeting specific work experience and salary criteria.
